DC Small Claims Court Hours, Address, and Location Guide

Where the Small Claims Court Is Located

The Small Claims and Conciliation Branch operates out of Court Building B, 510 4th Street NW, Room 120, Washington, DC 20001. This is a separate building from the main Moultrie Courthouse at 500 Indiana Avenue NW — a distinction that trips up first-time filers. The Moultrie Courthouse houses the Civil Actions Branch (for claims over $10,000) and several other court divisions, but weekday small claims business happens at Building B.

The clerk's office phone number is (202) 879-1120.

Regular Business Hours

The Small Claims Clerk's Office at Building B keeps the following schedule:

  • Monday through Friday: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Wednesday evenings: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

The Wednesday evening session is for document filing and clerk assistance only — the court does not conduct hearings or trials during evening hours. This window is useful if you can't take time off work during the day and need to file your Statement of Claim, submit proof of service, or pick up forms.

Saturday Hours (at a Different Location)

Saturday morning sessions run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, but there's a catch: since September 6, 2025, Saturday clerk services for the Small Claims Branch have been at the Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Avenue NW — not Building B.

If you plan to file on a Saturday, go to the Moultrie Courthouse. Building B is closed on weekends.

Planning Your Visit

A few practical notes for visiting Building B:

Security screening is at the entrance — allow extra time, especially during morning rush. Photo ID is required.

Bring exact payment or a check/money order for fees. Verify accepted payment methods by calling ahead, as not all clerk windows handle cards.

Parking around 4th Street NW is metered street parking. The area is also accessible via the Judiciary Square Metro station (Red Line), about a five-minute walk.

If you're filing in person, bring two copies of your complete filing packet — one for the court and one stamped copy for your records.

Alternatives to In-Person Filing

If these hours don't work for your schedule, you have two other options:

eFileDC (efiledcsuperiorcourt.gov) accepts small claims filings 24/7 from self-represented parties. Creating an account opts you into electronic service of court notices.

Mail filing — send your completed forms with a check or money order for the filing fee to the Small Claims Clerk's Office at the Building B address.

For the full filing process including deadline tracking and service of process instructions, our DC Small Claims Filing Guide covers everything from your first visit to hearing day.
