DC Small Claims Free Legal Help: Legal Aid, Pro Bono Clinics, and Court Resources
Free Resources for DC Small Claims Litigants
You don't need to hire a lawyer for small claims court, but you also don't have to navigate it completely alone. DC has several free legal resources specifically for unrepresented litigants. The catch: most operate on extremely limited schedules, so know the hours before you show up.
DC Courts Family Court Self-Help Center
Location: Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Avenue NW, Room JM-570 Phone: (202) 879-0096
The Family Court Self-Help Center serves family-law matters. It is not a small-claims resource.
For family-law matters, the center provides procedural information and form assistance, but staff cannot give legal advice or case strategy.
Consumer Law Resource Center (CLRC)
Location: Court Building B, 510 4th Street NW, Room 223 Hours: Every other Monday, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM; space is limited to 15 participants. Call (202) 780-2574 for dates.
Run by the DC Bar Pro Bono Center, the CLRC provides free legal help for unrepresented consumers handling small claims, debt collection, and security deposit disputes.
Volunteer attorneys provide legal information and may review contracts, assist with demand or reply letters, help people understand court proceedings, and coach self-represented parties. Arrive early because space is limited.

Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP) — Small Claims Resource Center
Phone: (202) 849-3608 Hours: Second and fourth Thursdays, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM; in person or virtually. Call (202) 849-3608 to attend virtually.
NLSP provides legal information about filing cases, small-claims procedures, and forms to both plaintiffs and defendants.
The service operates on a limited schedule. For help outside those sessions, contact another legal resource directly.
DC Bar Pro Bono Center
Phone: (202) 737-4700 Online: LawHelp.org/DC
Beyond the CLRC clinics, the DC Bar Pro Bono Center runs advice and referral sessions on select Saturdays and maintains online self-help resources through the LawHelp.org partnership. The Saturday sessions are first-come, first-served and also subject to capacity limits.
The Pro Bono Center can also connect you with volunteer attorneys for more involved cases, though availability depends on the nature of your claim and your income level.
Legal Aid DC
Phone: (202) 628-1161
Legal Aid DC provides free civil legal assistance to eligible District residents, including in consumer, housing, and debt-related matters. Eligibility is income-based; contact its intake line to ask whether you qualify for assistance with your case.
NLSP General Legal Services
Phone: (202) 832-6577
Beyond their small claims hotline, NLSP offers broader civil legal assistance for eligible DC residents on debt, housing, and consumer matters. If your small claims issue intersects with a larger housing or consumer problem, their general intake may be more appropriate than the Thursday-only hotline.
Making the Most of Free Help
These resources work best when you come prepared. Before calling a hotline or visiting a clinic:
- Know your case number (if you've already filed)
- Have your contract, receipts, or key documents accessible
- Write down your specific questions — "How do I serve a defendant who won't accept certified mail?" is more useful than "Can you help me with my case?"
- Know the deadlines you're working against (statute of limitations, hearing date, proof of service deadline)
The CLRC and NLSP Small Claims Resource Center provide legal information. For possible legal advice or representation, contact Legal Aid DC, NLSP General Legal Services, or a law-school clinic and ask whether it can assist with your type of case.
For a self-guided toolkit that walks you through every step — filing, service, evidence preparation, and hearing day — our DC Small Claims Filing Guide fills the gap between free legal information and a full attorney engagement.
