Wyandotte County Small Claims Court (Kansas City, KS)

Wyandotte County handles small claims through the 29th Judicial District Court in Kansas City, Kansas. If the person or business you're suing is in Wyandotte County — or the dispute happened there and the defendant lived there at the time — this is where you file.

Courthouse and Filing Location

The 29th Judicial District Court sits at 710 N 7th Street, Kansas City, KS 66101. Small claims filings go through the civil clerk's office on the main floor. Hours are typically 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, but confirm by calling ahead — court holidays and administrative closures can shift the schedule.

Parking around the courthouse is limited. Metered street parking and nearby surface lots are available, but plan extra time during morning docket hours.

Filing Fees

Wyandotte County follows the statewide fee schedule set by K.S.A. 61-2704:

  • $47.50 for claims of $500 or less
  • $67.50 for claims between $500.01 and $10,000

Pay by check or money order made out to "Clerk of the District Court." Confirm whether the clerk accepts cash or card — policies vary by county.

If you can't afford the filing fee, submit a notarized Poverty Affidavit under K.S.A. 61-4001 with your petition. The judge decides whether to defer costs.

Service of Process

After filing, the defendant must be served. You choose the method on the Service Request Form:

  • Sheriff service — the Wyandotte County Sheriff delivers the summons for approximately $15 per defendant
  • Certified mail — the clerk sends the summons via certified mail with return receipt, typically $8 to $12 in postage

If the defendant is in a different county, service goes through that county's sheriff or by certified mail to their address. You still file the case in Wyandotte County if that's the proper venue.

What to Expect

The clerk assigns a hearing date between 14 and 50 days from when the summons is issued. Wyandotte County typically schedules small claims hearings in the morning. You'll appear before a District Judge or Magistrate Judge in a bench trial — no jury, no attorneys for either side (K.S.A. 61-2707).

Bring printed copies of all your evidence: contracts, invoices, photos, demand letters, text messages, and receipts. Organize everything chronologically. The judge will hear both sides informally and usually announce the decision at the end of the hearing.

Kansas City Metro Jurisdictional Note

The Kansas City metro area straddles the state line. If the defendant lives in Kansas City, Missouri, you can't file in Wyandotte County — Missouri has its own court system with different rules and limits. Verify which side of the state line the defendant's address falls on before filing.

Similarly, if the defendant lives in Johnson County (Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa), you'd file in Johnson County instead, even though it's part of the same metro area.

Next Steps

Verify the defendant's address is in Wyandotte County, confirm the entity name through the Kansas Secretary of State search, and complete the Small Claims Petition. The Kansas Small Claims Filing Guide walks through the entire process — from the demand letter through evidence preparation and what to do after the hearing.
