Free Legal Help for QCAT Claims — LawRight, Legal Aid, and Community Legal Centres
Self-Representation Is the Default in QCAT
QCAT was designed for people to run their own cases. Under section 43 of the QCAT Act 2009, parties are expected to represent themselves. Legal representation is only allowed with the tribunal's permission (via Form 56), and leave is typically granted only in limited circumstances — where a party has impaired capacity, the dispute involves complex legal questions, or the other side already has a lawyer.
That means most people filing a minor civil dispute won't have a solicitor standing next to them. But "self-represented" doesn't mean "no help available." There are several free services that can assist with specific parts of the process without representing you at the hearing.
LawRight Self Representation Service
LawRight is the most relevant free service for QCAT litigants. It's an independent community legal organisation that coordinates pro bono assistance specifically for people representing themselves in Queensland courts and tribunals.
What LawRight can do:
- Free appointments with a volunteer solicitor to help you understand the process
- Assistance drafting your application, affidavits, and written submissions
- Guidance on which form to use and how to structure your evidence
What LawRight can't do:
- Represent you at the hearing — you still present your own case
- Guarantee outcomes or meet your deadlines — there can be a wait of up to two weeks for an appointment
- Act as your ongoing legal advisor throughout the case
Contact LawRight through their website or call their intake line to check eligibility and book an appointment. They operate out of Brisbane but can assist state-wide.
Legal Aid Queensland
Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) provides free telephone legal information and advice on 1300 65 11 88. For QCAT civil disputes, their role is mostly informational — they can explain the process, answer general questions about your rights, and point you to the right resources.
LAQ doesn't provide representation in QCAT minor civil disputes. They'll typically refer you to LawRight for application drafting help, or to your nearest Community Legal Centre for face-to-face advice.

Community Legal Centres
Community Legal Centres (CLCs) across Queensland offer free legal advice to people in their local area. Caxton Legal Centre in Brisbane is one of the largest and most well-known, providing free advice sessions for disadvantaged Queenslanders.
Caxton Legal Centre explicitly excludes building, commercial, and business disputes. Other CLCs set their own service areas and eligibility rules. If your QCAT claim involves an unpaid commercial invoice or a contractor dispute, check the centre's criteria before booking.
Other CLCs that may assist depending on your location and circumstances:
- Queensland Statewide Tenant Advice and Referral Service (QSTARS) — specifically for tenancy disputes
- Dispute Resolution Centres — free mediation services funded by the Department of Justice, useful for neighbour and fence disputes before they reach QCAT
What Free Services Won't Cover
None of these services will prepare your complete case for you. They'll help with specific questions and individual documents, but the work of assembling your evidence bundle, tracking your deadlines, ensuring correct service, and presenting your case at the hearing falls on you.
Registry staff at QCAT are also legally prohibited from giving you advice — they can hand you a blank form and tell you the fee, but they can't tell you which form to use, how to word your claim, or whether your evidence is strong enough.
The gap between "here's a form" and "here's how to run your case start to finish" is exactly what the QCAT filing guide fills — the complete procedural workflow from demand letter through to enforcement, with fillable checklists and deadline trackers built for self-represented applicants.
