Nevada Small Claims Self-Help Centers and Free Legal Resources
Before you spend hours searching court websites for forms and instructions, know that Nevada has several free resources specifically designed to help people navigate small claims court without a lawyer. The catch is that each one has limits on what it can do — understanding those limits saves you from hitting a dead end mid-case.
Civil Law Self-Help Center (Clark County)
The Civil Law Self-Help Center (CLSHC) is run by the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) inside the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas. It is the most comprehensive free resource for Clark County litigants.
What it offers: an online portal at civillawselfhelpcenter.org with step-by-step small claims guides, instructional videos, and downloadable court forms. In-person, it provides free "Ask-A-Lawyer" small claims consultations and small claims educational classes that walk you through the filing process.
What it cannot do: staff cannot fill out your forms for you, cannot represent you in court, and cannot give you legal advice about whether your specific case will win. They explain the process — you apply it to your situation.
The center is most useful early in the process, when you need help choosing the right forms, understanding venue rules, or figuring out whether your dispute belongs in small claims or general civil court.
Nevada Legal Services
Nevada Legal Services provides free legal assistance to low-income residents across the state. For small claims, they offer self-help brochures, tenant-landlord dispute packets, and in some cases direct legal advice from staff attorneys.
Eligibility is income-based. If you qualify, they may help you draft a demand letter, review your complaint before filing, or advise on evidence preparation. Their offices serve both Northern and Southern Nevada.
Northern Nevada Legal Aid (formerly Washoe Legal Services)
Northern Nevada Legal Aid operates primarily in Northern Nevada and provides similar self-help resources for litigants in Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County. Formerly Washoe Legal Services, it offers brochures, form packets, and occasional clinics for small claims filers. Like Nevada Legal Services, its direct assistance is income-qualified.

Neighborhood Justice Center (Clark County)
The Neighborhood Justice Center is Clark County's mediation service. It provides voluntary and court-referred mediation to resolve disputes before or during a small claims case. Mediation through the center is free or low-cost. If both parties agree to mediate, a trained mediator helps negotiate a settlement — and if you reach one, you sign a Stipulation for Settlement that the court enforces.
This is especially useful when you want to preserve a relationship (neighbor disputes, ongoing business relationships) or when the facts are not cleanly in your favor and a negotiated outcome is better than a judicial coin flip.
What Free Resources Do Not Cover
None of these organizations will organize your evidence for you, prepare your three-set hearing binder, track your service-of-process deadlines, or walk you through the eFileNV portal screen by screen. They provide the framework; the execution is on you.
Court clerks are another free resource, but they operate under a strict legal limitation: clerks cannot give legal advice or help you fill out forms. They can tell you which form to use and what the filing fee is, but not whether your claim has merit or how to calculate your damages.
The Nevada small claims filing guide picks up where the free resources leave off — step-by-step instructions through every stage of the process, fillable deadline trackers, evidence organizers, and a township venue worksheet, all specific to Nevada's 17-county Justice Court system.
