Free Legal Help for Michigan Small Claims Defendants
Michigan Legal Help
Michigan Legal Help (michiganlegalhelp.org) is the first place every self-represented defendant should visit. It is funded by the Michigan State Bar Foundation and the Legal Services Corporation, and its self-help information and tools are free. The site provides:
- Step-by-step articles explaining what happens after you are served with Form DC 84.
- Interactive tools that walk you through your response options — dispute, settle, counterclaim, request installment payments, or remove the case to General Civil court.
- A directory of local legal aid offices organized by county.
- Explanations of the Community Dispute Resolution Program (CDRP) mediation process.
Michigan Legal Help explicitly confirms that Small Claims defendants do not need to file a written answer — a fact that many national legal websites get wrong.
Legal Aid Organizations
Michigan has several regional legal aid organizations that provide free civil legal assistance based on income eligibility. These offices can help you understand your rights, review your paperwork, and in some cases represent you if the case is removed to General Civil court.
Lakeshore Legal Aid covers Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, and several eastern Michigan counties. They handle landlord-tenant disputes, consumer issues, and general civil matters.
Legal Services of South Central Michigan serves Washtenaw, Ingham, Jackson, Eaton, Lenawee, Hillsdale, Monroe, and additional south-central Michigan counties — covering Ann Arbor and surrounding areas.
Legal Aid of Western Michigan covers Kent (Grand Rapids), Ottawa, Muskegon, and neighboring counties.
Michigan Advocacy Program operates the Washtenaw County office and coordinates statewide with other providers.
To find the office that serves your county, use the referral tool on michiganlegalhelp.org or call the legal aid intake line at 1-888-783-8190.
SCAO Forms and Court Self-Help
The Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) publishes every form a small claims defendant might need, downloadable for free:
- Form DC 84info — the Small Claims Overview document that should have come with your served papers. If it was missing, download and read it.
- Form DC 86 — Demand and Order for Removal, Small Claims, if you want to move the case to General Civil court.
- Form MC 15 — Motion for Installment Payments, if you cannot pay a judgment in a lump sum.
- Form MC 99 — Motion to Set Aside Default Judgment, if you missed your hearing.
These forms are available at courts.michigan.gov or from the clerk's window at your local District Court.

Community Dispute Resolution Programs (CDRP)
Every Michigan county has access to a CDRP mediation center, funded under MCL 691.1551. Mediation is voluntary unless a judge orders it. Ask the local center about fees before scheduling. If both sides agree to mediate, a neutral third party helps negotiate a resolution without going to trial. CDRP mediators do not decide who wins — they facilitate a conversation.
Several courts, including Washtenaw County's 15th District Court, schedule a mandatory mediation session before the small claims trial. Even where mediation is optional, it is worth considering: a settlement avoids the uncertainty of a magistrate's decision and lets both sides control the outcome.
MiFILE for Electronic Filing
Michigan's MiFILE electronic filing system (mifile.courts.michigan.gov) lets you file documents with participating District Courts online. If you need to submit a counterclaim, a removal demand, or a motion, MiFILE saves a trip to the clerk's office. Not all courts are on MiFILE yet — check whether your District Court participates before relying on it.
When Free Resources Are Not Enough
Free resources cover the rules and provide the forms, but they do not walk you through the decision of which response path to take, how to organize your evidence for the specific type of dispute you are in, or what to expect minute by minute at a hearing before a magistrate. If you want a structured roadmap that connects the procedure to practical preparation, the Michigan Small Claims Response Guide fills that gap.
