Iowa Small Claims Court Online Case Lookup

Finding Your Case in the System

When you are served with an Iowa small claims Original Notice, one of the first things you should do is verify the case exists on the court's online system. Iowa Courts Online lets you search for your case, confirm the details, and track what has been filed.

The tool is free and public — no account required for basic case searches.

How to Search Iowa Courts Online

Iowa Courts Online is the public-facing search portal for all Iowa District Court cases, including small claims. Here is how to find your case:

  1. Go to the Iowa Judicial Branch website at iowacourts.gov and navigate to the Online Court case search tool.
  2. Select the county printed on your Original Notice.
  3. Search by case number. Your case number appears on the Original Notice — it follows a format like 02811 SCSC015384, where the prefix identifies the county and "SCSC" indicates small claims.
  4. Or search by name. If you cannot find the case number on your papers, search by your last name. The system will return all cases where you are listed as a party.

The search results show the case type, the parties, the filing date, and any scheduled hearing dates or orders.

What You Can See Online

Once you pull up your case, the public docket may display:

  • Filing history — entries for filings such as the plaintiff's Original Notice, your answer (if filed), motions, and court orders.
  • Hearing dates — the date, time, and courthouse location for your scheduled hearing.
  • Judge assignment — the judicial magistrate assigned to hear the case.
  • Case status — whether the case is open, has a pending hearing, or has been resolved.

Iowa Courts Online shows case information and docket entries; it does not provide every court document for download. To obtain a copy of a filing, use EDMS if it is available to you or contact the clerk of the district court.

If Your Case Does Not Appear Right Away

Do not assume the papers are fake just because the case does not show up immediately. There is often a processing lag between the date the clerk accepts the filing and when it appears in the online system. This delay can range from a few hours to a few business days, especially if service was completed late in the week.

If the case still does not appear after several days, contact the Clerk of the District Court in the county listed on your notice. Use the phone number from the court's website — never the number on the papers themselves, in case the papers are fraudulent.

Meanwhile, treat the 20-day response deadline as real. The clock started on the date you were served, not the date the case shows up online.

EDMS vs. Iowa Courts Online

Iowa has two separate court portals, and they serve different purposes:

  • Iowa Courts Online — public case search. No account needed. Look up case details, hearing dates, and filing history.
  • EDMS (Electronic Document Management System) — the electronic filing portal. If you file electronically, you use EDMS to file your answer (eForm 3.11), upload documents, and receive notices of electronic filing. A self-represented defendant may use the one-time paper-filing exemption for an initial filing under Iowa Rule of Electronic Procedure 16.302(2)(b).

To file your answer electronically, log into EDMS, locate your case by county and case number, select "Small Claims Common Filings" as the document category, and upload your completed eForm 3.11 as a PDF.

Tracking the Case After Filing

After you file your answer, keep checking the docket periodically. The clerk will post the hearing notice, and the magistrate may issue orders — for example, granting or denying a continuance request. EDMS sends electronic notifications to registered filers, but checking the public docket yourself catches anything that might have slipped through.

For a complete walkthrough of filing your answer, preparing evidence, and handling the hearing, the Iowa Small Claims Response Guide covers every step from service of process to post-judgment options.
