Free Legal Help for Yukon Small Claims Court: YPLEA, Legal Aid, and Other Resources
Legal Help Exists — But Know What Each Service Can Actually Do
Yukon has several free and low-cost resources for people navigating Small Claims Court, but each has strict boundaries on what it provides. Understanding those boundaries before you call saves frustration and wasted time.
The key distinction: legal information (explaining how the court works, which forms to use, what the deadlines are) is freely available from multiple sources. Legal advice (telling you whether your specific case will succeed, how to argue it, or what settlement to accept) requires a lawyer, and lawyers are not free.
YPLEA Law Line
The Yukon Public Legal Education Association is the first resource most people reach for. Their Law Line provides free legal information by phone.
- Phone: (867) 668-5297 or toll-free in Yukon 1-866-667-4305
- Office: 102-2131 Second Avenue (Tutshi Building), Whitehorse
- Email: [email protected]
YPLEA staff can explain which court form to use, how to calculate your deadline, where to file, and what happens at each stage of the process. They publish self-help materials and coordinate with the court registry to make sure you have the right information.
What YPLEA cannot do: give legal advice about your case, tell you whether you will win, draft your documents, or represent you in court. They are legally prohibited from doing so. If you need those services, they will refer you to a lawyer.
Yukon Legal Aid
The Yukon Legal Services Society administers government-funded legal aid — but coverage is strictly limited to criminal and family law matters. Civil small claims cases are completely excluded from Legal Aid. Do not count on Legal Aid for your Small Claims Court dispute, regardless of your income level.

Lawyer Referral Service
The Law Society of Yukon operates a Lawyer Referral Service that connects you with a participating Whitehorse lawyer for an initial 30-minute consultation.
- Phone: (867) 668-4231
- Cost: $30 including GST
This is the most cost-effective way to get case-specific legal advice without committing to full representation. Use it strategically — prepare your questions in advance, bring your documents, and focus on the specific issues where you need a lawyer's opinion (whether your claim is within the limitation period, how to handle a counterclaim, whether your evidence is strong enough).
Official Court Booklets
The Yukon Courts publish six free PDF booklets covering the small claims lifecycle:
- What is Small Claims Court?
- How to Start a Small Claim
- You Are Being Sued — What to Do?
- Pre-Trial Conferences
- Getting Ready for Court
- Judgments and How to Collect a Small Claim
These are accurate on court rules and fee schedules. The limitation: they are distributed as separate static PDFs without workflow templates, completion instructions for each form field, or deadline calculation tools. They tell you what the process is; they do not walk you through executing it.
Court Registry Staff
The clerks at the Whitehorse, Dawson City, and Watson Lake registries answer procedural questions every day. They can tell you which form to file, confirm the filing fee, explain how to get documents sworn, and let you know if your paperwork is complete enough to process.
They cannot tell you whether your claim is strong, how to argue your case, or what settlement to accept. Do not ask them for legal advice — they are not permitted to provide it, and it puts them in an uncomfortable position.
Putting the Pieces Together
For a typical self-represented small claims litigant in Yukon, the practical approach combines these resources:
- Read the court booklets for the procedural overview.
- Call YPLEA if you have questions about which forms to use or how a specific step works.
- Use the $30 Lawyer Referral Service consultation for the one or two legal questions that are actually case-specific.
- Use the Making a Small Claim in Yukon guide for the complete step-by-step framework — every form, every deadline, every enforcement tool — that pulls the whole process into a single reference you can follow from start to finish.
