Filing Small Claims Court Documents from Outside Whitehorse

Three Registries, Three Sets of Hours

Yukon's Small Claims Court operates through three registries. Whitehorse is the main one, open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Dawson City and Watson Lake are branch registries with shorter hours: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

If you live near one of the branch registries, you can file in person during those hours. But if you're in Faro, Carmacks, Mayo, Haines Junction, Old Crow, or any other community without a registry, you need to file remotely.

Filing by Mail

You can mail your Form 02 Reply (or any court document) to any of the three registries. For a disputed Form 02 Reply, include the $25 filing fee as a cheque or money order payable to the "Minister of Finance"; other documents may have different fees.

The critical detail: the filing date is the date the registry receives and stamps your documents, not the date you mailed them. Mail from remote Yukon communities to Whitehorse can take 5 to 10 business days. If your 20-day deadline is approaching, mail may not be fast enough. Filing your reply does not serve the plaintiff; you must also serve them a copy within the response deadline.

Registry mailing addresses:

  • Whitehorse: Box 2703, Whitehorse, YT Y1A 2C6
  • Dawson City: Box 651, Dawson City, YT Y0B 1G0
  • Watson Lake: Box 192, Watson Lake, YT Y0A 1C0

Filing by Fax

Fax filing is permitted and can solve the transit time problem. Each registry has a fax line:

  • Whitehorse: 867-393-6212
  • Dawson City: 867-993-5311
  • Watson Lake: 867-536-7564

There's an important catch: a faxed filing is only valid if you immediately follow up by mailing or hand-delivering the original signed paper documents to the registry. The fax gets your filing date locked in, but the originals must follow without delay.

Documents faxed after 4:00 PM Yukon time are date-stamped the next business day. If your deadline falls on a Friday and you fax your Form 02 at 4:30 PM, the filing date rolls to Monday.

No Online Filing

As of late 2026, the Yukon Small Claims Court does not operate an e-filing portal. You cannot file documents by email, through a web portal, or through general government email addresses. Filing requires physical documents—in person, by mail, or by fax with originals to follow.

Attending Hearings Remotely

Filing remotely is only half the problem. Once your Form 02 Reply is filed, a party can ask the court registry to schedule a pre-trial conference, which you must attend once scheduled. If travelling to Whitehorse isn't feasible, you can apply via Form 08 Notice of Application to attend by video conference or telephone.

The Territorial Court judges also travel on circuit to outlying communities like Dawson City, Watson Lake, Haines Junction, Mayo, and Carmacks. Small claims conferences and hearings for cases originating in those areas may be scheduled during circuit sittings, reducing the need to travel to Whitehorse.

Practical Tips for Remote Filers

If you don't have access to a printer for court forms, call the Whitehorse Central Registry at 867-667-5441 (or toll-free within Yukon at 1-800-661-0408 ext. 5619) and ask them to mail you a form package. Local territorial administration offices and public libraries may also have printing facilities.

Build a timeline that accounts for transit: if your deadline is day 20 and mail takes a week, your practical deadline is day 13 for mailing. If you're using fax to lock in the date, have the originals in the mail the same day.

The Responding to a Small Claim in Yukon guide includes filing instructions for all three registries and a deadline worksheet that factors in remote filing logistics.
