How Much Does It Cost to Collect a Judgment in Alaska?

Winning the judgment was the straightforward part. Now you need to figure out whether the money you spend enforcing it will eat into what you recover — or whether it is all recoverable from the debtor.

The short answer: most execution fees are modest and recoverable, but they add up fast if you need multiple attempts. Here is every cost you are likely to encounter.

Court Fees

Every writ of execution issued by the Alaska District Court clerk costs $25 under Administrative Rule 9(e)(10). That fee applies per writ regardless of how many debtors are named on it. You pay it each time you request a new writ — one for a wage garnishment (CIV-525), another for a bank levy (CIV-500), another for a PFD execution (CIV-502).

If you pursue all three tools on the same debtor, that is $75 in writ fees alone.

A fee waiver is available for low-income creditors through Form TF-920 under Administrative Rule 10.

Process Server Fees

A private process server in Anchorage or Fairbanks typically charges between $65 and $150 per levy, depending on the number of attempts needed and the distance traveled. In rural Alaska — the Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su Valley, or off-road communities — expect higher mileage surcharges.

If no private process server operates in your area, the Alaska State Troopers Judicial Services unit can serve writs, though availability and turnaround depend on trooper workload in that region.

PFD execution is the exception: the court clerk serves it by certified mail, so you pay the $25 writ fee plus postage, with no private process server needed.

Recording Fees

To place a judgment lien on the debtor's real property, you record a certified copy of the judgment with the DNR Recorder's Office in the district where the property sits. Alaska has 34 recording districts. The current DNR recording-fee schedule charges $20 for the first page and $5 for each additional page; the court clerk's fee for a certified copy is separate.

When Costs Become Recoverable

Under Alaska execution procedure, reasonable court fees and process server costs you pay to enforce a judgment are added to the judgment balance. For judgments entered in 2026, add 6.75% annual interest under AS 09.30.070; that rate is fixed when the judgment is entered.

The catch: you must front every dollar. If the writ comes back unsatisfied because the bank account was empty or the employer says the debtor no longer works there, you do not get a refund. You now have an additional $90–$175 sunk into a judgment that may still be uncollectable.

Attorney Costs Versus Self-Help

A private attorney retainer for post-judgment enforcement is commonly $500–$2,500 or more. For a $2,000 small claims judgment, attorney fees can easily exceed the judgment itself — which is why most creditors handle enforcement on their own.

A few situations where an attorney may be worth the cost:

  • The debtor has moved out of state and you need to domesticate the judgment in another jurisdiction
  • The debtor files bankruptcy and you need to navigate the automatic stay under 11 U.S.C. § 362
  • Multiple contested exemption hearings are dragging out the process

For everything else — filing writ packets, coordinating process servers, garnishing PFDs, and recording liens — the CIV-550 booklet and the court's fillable forms make self-representation workable.

Keeping Track of What You Spend

Every dollar you spend on enforcement should be logged: the $25 writ fee, the process server invoice, the recording fee, certified mail postage. When you eventually collect, your total judgment balance includes the original award, accrued interest, and documented reasonable execution costs.

The Alaska Judgment Collection Guide includes a payment and interest ledger designed for exactly this — tracking principal reductions, interest accrual, and cost recovery so you know your true balance at any point during enforcement.
