Notice of Satisfaction Queensland — How to Close an Enforcement Case

The debtor finally paid. The principal, the post-judgment interest, and the recoverable enforcement costs are all cleared. What happens now?

If you do nothing, the judgment sits on the court register as an unsatisfied debt — which is unfair to the debtor and can create problems if either party needs to reference the case later. You should file a notice of satisfaction to formally close the enforcement.

What a Notice of Satisfaction Does

A notice of satisfaction tells the Magistrates Court that the registered judgment has been paid in full. The court marks the file as satisfied, and no further enforcement warrants can be issued against the debtor for that order.

When to File

File the notice after you have received the full amount owed — principal, post-judgment interest calculated to the date of final payment, and any recoverable enforcement costs (bailiff fees, service fees). Do not file until every dollar is cleared.

If the debtor paid in instalments over several months, wait until the final instalment clears before filing.

How to File

Lodge a written notice with the Magistrates Court registry where the judgment is registered. The notice should state:

  • The court file number (assigned when the QCAT order was registered)
  • The original QCAT case number
  • The names of the parties
  • Confirmation that the judgment debt has been paid in full
  • The date of final payment

Contact the registry handling the registered order to confirm the current form and supporting documents it accepts to record full satisfaction. Do not assume that a letter or a Form 9 application is sufficient.

What About Outstanding Warrants?

If you have any active enforcement warrants — a redirection of earnings to the debtor's employer, a seizure warrant with the bailiff — you need to withdraw or cancel them. Notify the employer or bank that the warrant should cease, and advise the court that execution should stop.

Leaving an active warrant running after full payment has been received exposes you to an overpayment situation and potential court sanctions.

Credit Reporting Implications

The court does not notify credit reporting bodies when a judgment is satisfied. A debtor seeking to update a credit file should send proof of satisfaction directly to Equifax or Illion.

The Bigger Picture

Closing the case cleanly is the last step in the enforcement process. Our Queensland QCAT Order Enforcement Guide covers the entire sequence — from registering the QCAT order through financial discovery, warrant selection, and execution to this final step of recording satisfaction and withdrawing active warrants.
