New York Small Claims Court Evening Sessions
NYC Civil Court Runs Evening Small Claims Sessions
If you work a daytime job, you don't have to burn a vacation day to file or attend a small claims hearing. All five NYC Civil Court boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — schedule small claims hearings on weeknight evenings. Calendar call typically starts at 6:30 PM, and cases are heard in the order they're called.
The Manhattan Small Claims Part at 111 Centre Street runs evening sessions on weeknights. Brooklyn (141 Livingston Street), Queens (89-17 Sutphin Boulevard), the Bronx (851 Grand Concourse), and Staten Island (927 Castleton Avenue) each hold their own evening calendars on designated nights. The specific evening varies by courthouse — call the small claims clerk's office at your borough courthouse to confirm which night your case is scheduled.
When you file your claim in person, the clerk assigns your hearing date. You don't get to choose an evening versus daytime slot in most boroughs — the clerk assigns based on the court's calendar. If you receive a daytime date and genuinely cannot attend, you can request an adjournment to be rescheduled, though there's no guarantee the new date will be an evening session.
Nassau and Suffolk District Courts Also Offer Night Court
Outside NYC, Nassau County District Court at 99 Main Street in Hempstead holds weekly night court sessions starting at 6:00 PM. The Western Suffolk County District Court's First District location at 3105 Veterans Memorial Highway in Ronkonkoma holds night court on designated third Wednesdays at 5:30 PM. Other district locations hold daytime sessions; confirm the location of your assigned hearing with the clerk.
The clerk schedules your hearing date when you file, so ask whether an evening slot is available.
What About Town and Village Courts?
Town and Village Justice Courts across upstate New York and Eastern Long Island often hold evening sessions by default. Many of these courts are staffed by part-time justices who hold regular jobs during the day, so court business — including small claims hearings — naturally falls on weeknight evenings. Scheduling varies widely: some town courts sit one evening per week, others twice a month. Contact your local town clerk to find out when small claims matters are heard.
The key advantage of Justice Court evening sessions is accessibility. The disadvantage is the lower $3,000 monetary cap compared to $5,000 in City and District Courts or $10,000 in NYC Civil Court.

What to Expect at an Evening Session
Evening small claims sessions follow the same procedure as daytime hearings. You check in with the clerk, cases are called in order, and you present your evidence to a judge or arbitrator. Bring all your documents — printed photographs, contracts, receipts, repair estimates — organized and ready to present. Judges and arbitrators will not look at evidence on your phone.
Evening calendars can be crowded. Some nights have dozens of cases scheduled, and your case might not be called until 8:00 or 9:00 PM. Plan to be there for the full evening.
If you're preparing for your hearing, the New York Small Claims Filing Guide walks through what to bring, how to organize your evidence, and how to present your case clearly — whether your hearing falls on a Tuesday night or a Friday morning.
