AlaFile Small Claims Filing Alabama: E-Filing Step by Step

Standing in line at the courthouse isn't the only way to file a small claims case in Alabama. AlaFile — the state's official electronic filing portal — lets you file your claim, pay fees, and track your case from your computer. Here's how it works for self-represented litigants.

What AlaFile Is (and Isn't)

AlaFile (alafile.alacourt.gov) is the Alabama Unified Judicial System's e-filing platform. Licensed attorneys are required to file through it. Self-represented litigants can choose to use it — it's optional, not mandatory.

AlaFile is not the same as Alacourt (alacourt.com), which is a separate paid service for searching and viewing court records. You don't need an Alacourt account to e-file. And AlaFile doesn't generate your legal documents — you prepare Form SM-1 yourself and upload the completed PDF.

Setting Up Your Pro Se Account

Go to alafile.alacourt.gov and look for the self-represented litigant registration option. You'll need:

  • A valid email address (this becomes your login and where court notifications go)
  • Your full legal name as it appears on government ID
  • A mailing address
  • A phone number

Once registered, you can file in any Alabama District Court through the portal. There's no separate registration per county.

Filing Your Small Claims Case Online

After logging in, select the court where you're filing (the District Court in the correct county), choose the Small Claims case type, and follow the prompts:

  1. Upload your Statement of Claim (Form SM-1). Complete the form first — either by printing, filling in by hand, and scanning to PDF, or by filling in the PDF electronically. AlaFile accepts PDF uploads.

  2. Enter party information. You'll type in the claimant (your) name and the defendant's legal name and address exactly as they appear on your Statement of Claim.

  3. Pay the filing fee. AlaFile accepts online fee payments. The fee depends on your claim amount — about $52–$265 in the county schedules reviewed, depending on the tier and local surcharges. Confirm the amount shown for your filing before submitting payment.

  4. Submit. AlaFile generates a confirmation and a filing timestamp. The clerk reviews the submission and, if accepted, assigns a case number.

What Happens After E-Filing

The District Court Clerk reviews your filing. If there's an issue (wrong court, missing information, payment problem), the clerk may reject it with a note explaining why. Follow the clerk's instructions to correct and resubmit it.

Once accepted, the court issues a summons and initiates service of process — the same as a paper filing. Service still happens physically (certified mail or sheriff). E-filing doesn't change how the defendant gets served.

Use AlaFile to track docket activity, and check the case record or contact the clerk to confirm service, an answer, and any hearing date.

Advantages of E-Filing

  • No trip to the courthouse for the initial filing
  • Electronic payment — no need for a cashier's check or money order
  • Timestamped confirmation — you have immediate proof of when you filed
  • Case tracking — check docket entries and upcoming dates online

When Paper Filing Makes More Sense

E-filing requires converting everything to PDF and navigating an online interface. If you're not comfortable with that, paper filing by hand delivery or certified mail is another option. Bring your completed Form SM-1, the filing fee (cashier's check or money order — personal checks are rejected), and enough copies for the court and each defendant.

Some litigants e-file the initial claim but handle subsequent filings (subpoenas, default judgment applications) in person. There's no requirement to be consistent.

The Alabama Small Claims Filing Guide walks through both paper and electronic filing paths, including how to fill out Form SM-1 field by field and navigate the fee schedule.
